Carla Swansburg is the CEO of ClearyX. She is responsible for all aspects of building and growing the ClearyX business, including developing strategies for new and innovative models of legal service delivery for the firm and its clients using unique combinations of people, process and technology. ClearyX is a fully remote, tech-forward team focused on reimagining how legal services can be delivered in ways that provide improved efficiency, high quality work product and a better client and user experience.
Carla was formerly the Vice President and General Manager (Canada & Latin America) of another alternative legal services provider. She began her legal career as a litigator in private practice, then moved in-house at one of Canada’s largest banks where she led the banking disputes and investigations team. Carla then served as the Chief Innovation Officer at a large Canadian national firm. She served as one of the first Presidents for the Ontario Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (2008-2009).
Carla’s experience includes leading transformation and innovation projects, overseeing the implementation of emerging legal technologies in practice, and building high performing teams in new legal markets and services. Carla regularly speaks and is a frequent interview subject on topics relating to legal service delivery and technology. In 2021 she authored the chapter on legal research and writing for the Emond Publishing book, “Litigating AI”. She was named as one of Canada’s Most Influential Lawyers for 2022 by Canadian Lawyer Magazine, in the “Changemaker” category and was a finalist in the Business Management category for the Canadian General Counsel Awards 2023. From 2021-2022 Carla was on the Board of Develop Nova Scotia. She is the co-chair of the Law Society of Ontario’s Access to Innovation project.
Carla obtained a B.A. in Theatre Studies (1989) and LLB/JD from Dalhousie University (1993), and an MBA from Rotman/University of Toronto (2018) where she graduated on the Dean’s List and as a Bregman Scholar.
